Careers

The AYES program also offers opportunities for actual on-the-job experience for qualified students with participating employers. Paid experiences will typically be part-time after school, and full-time during the summer between your junior and senior years.
The increasing sophistication of today’s vehicles requires technicians with the expertise to repair them. By enrolling in an AYES program, you can become that expert. There is a shortage of qualified automotive technicians today, and research shows this trend will continue. This means job security for the people who enter and excel in automotive service.

AYES is a partnership between your school and a number of participating automotive service employers in your area. It's carefully designed to provide you with the basic classroom knowledge you'll need, and with the practical, on-the-job (paid!) experiences with an employer.

As an AYES student, you'll spend much of your week in the classroom, earning the academic credits you'll need for high school graduation. You'll also spend numerous hours in your AYES school's automotive technology laboratory, learning the scientific concepts behind today's sophisticated auto systems. And you'll gain basic hands-on skills, including shop safety and proper use of hand tools and large-scale diagnostic/repair equipment. The AYES program also offers opportunities for actual on-the-job experience for qualified students in participating dealerships and independent and aftermarket employers. Paid experiences will typically be part-time after school, and full-time during the summer between your junior and senior years.

When you graduate from high school, you'll be well prepared with the academic and technical skills to enter the workplace as a full-time entry-level technician. Or you can pursue further academic studies, in the technological field of your choice.

Getting Started
  • If your high school or vocational/technical school participates in AYES, ask your counselor how you can enroll in the program.
  • If your school is not yet part of AYES, talk to a counselor or instructor about what is available in your school's automotive technology program.
  • Contact your local automobile dealer association to learn about education and employment opportunities in your community.
